It works alongside Sefton Carers Centre and the council’s hospital social work teams at Southport and Aintree.
It is a good service and Southport is fortunate to have it. It is designed for people who have very little other support, and its purpose is to get someone home and settled. What no six-week package is built to do is rebuild the strength that was lost on the ward.

Do you cover all of Southport?

Do I need a referral from my GP?
No. We are a private service and you can contact us directly. Many people call us themselves; just as many are rung by a son or daughter who has noticed a parent is less steady than they were.
We're in Birkdale and my father can't get to a clinic any more. Does that rule out physiotherapy?
No — it is the reason we exist. We bring the assessment and the equipment to the house. It also means we can work on the actual obstacles: your own front step, your own stairs, the walk to the gate, rather than a clinic’s flat floor and standard-height plinth.
He's been home a fortnight and the carers come four times a day. Is it too late to start?
No. A care package written in the first week home is set at the level someone needed on the day they were discharged, and people often improve past it without anyone revisiting it. Starting now is about changing what he can do, which is what eventually changes what he needs.
Can you help someone get back to walking on the prom?
Often, yes — and it is a better goal than it sounds. Level ground with a bench every hundred yards is exactly what a graded walking programme needs, which is not something most towns can offer. We build up the distance in stages, starting at the front door.
Can you visit a relative in their care home in Southport?
Yes. We provide physiotherapy in care homes across Sefton and West Lancashire, working alongside the home’s own staff rather than instead of them. Families usually arrange it directly with us.
Can you help my mother home from Southport hospital?
Yes, and it is worth ringing before she is discharged rather than after. A ward gets somebody safe enough to leave: a few steps on a flat floor, staff at hand, rails in the right places. Her own hallway, her own stairs and her own bathroom are a different job, and the first fortnight at home is when most ground is lost. Sefton Council adult social care — the route into a care needs assessment, equipment and care at home. Their hospital social work teams cover both Southport and Aintree. Many families use council support and private physiotherapy side by side.
Mobility and equipment — Millercare and Ableworld both have showrooms in Southport, and Southport and Formby Wheelchair Service provides NHS assessment and seating for people with a local GP. If a chair is too low or a frame is the wrong height, that is often the first thing we notice.
