Getting you home from hospital
Cambridge is home to Addenbrooke’s Hospital on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus — the East of England’s major trauma centre — alongside Royal Papworth, the specialist heart and lung hospital on the same campus. For older people, the road home often runs through the Cambridge Rehabilitation Unit at Brookfields Hospital on Mill Road, very often after a fall or fracture treated at Addenbrooke’s.
This is the gap we close. We can often be at the door within 48 hours of discharge, while there’s still strength and confidence to build on. Call us as soon as you have a date.

Can you help my relative come home from Addenbrooke's?
Yes — we can often start home rehabilitation within 48 hours of discharge. We support families across Cambridge whose relatives are leaving Addenbrooke’s Hospital after a fall, fracture, surgery or serious illness, including those stepping down through the Cambridge Rehabilitation Unit at Brookfields Hospital on Mill Road. Call us as soon as you have a discharge date.
Can you visit someone at the Cambridge Rehabilitation Unit before they're discharged?
Yes — with the ward’s agreement, we can assess your relative at the Cambridge Rehabilitation Unit at Brookfields Hospital before they come home, so their home programme is ready from day one. Many older people lose strength waiting on a rehabilitation ward; our job is getting them home and progressing, not sitting still.
How quickly can someone be seen in Cambridge?
Usually within a few days, sometimes the next day. There is no NHS waiting list and no GP referral needed — you contact us directly and we arrange a first visit at a time that suits your family. Our physiotherapists visit homes right across Cambridge, from Chesterton and Arbury to Cherry Hinton and Trumpington.
My mother lives in a village outside Cambridge. Will you still come?
Yes — we cover the villages ringing the city, including Girton, Histon and Impington, Milton, Fulbourn, Great Shelford, Sawston and Waterbeach. If your village is not listed, call us. Coverage depends on which physiotherapist is nearest, and we will give you an honest answer rather than a maybe.
Do you visit people in care homes in Cambridge?
Yes — we visit residents in care homes across Cambridge and the surrounding villages, working alongside care staff so that everyday routines support a resident’s mobility rather than working against it. Families can arrange this directly, and care home managers can contact us about regular visits for several residents.
Can physiotherapy help someone with dementia at home in Cambridge?
Yes. Dementia rehabilitation is one of our specialisms, led by our Clinical Director Will Ferguson. We help people stay mobile, reduce their risk of falling and keep their independence for longer, working across Chesterton, Arbury, Cherry Hinton and the surrounding villages. Many families come to us after a fall or a hospital stay at Addenbrooke’s, when confidence has dropped and walking has become harder.

Accora are based just outside Cambridge in Orwell, and design 24-hour postural equipment used across the NHS and in homes nationally. They are genuine innovators in the field — their FloorBed was the first floor-level nursing bed of its kind, lowering to 71mm to reduce falls and fall-related injury, and their Configura range of tilt-in-space seating supports people with complex postural needs.
They also employ their own clinical team — occupational therapists, tissue viability nurses and moving and handling trainers — who provide training and support to the people prescribing and using the equipment. Our physiotherapists have attended their 24-hour postural care conference, and that shared understanding is part of why the relationship works.
We work alongside Accora to get the right bed or chair into someone’s home quickly, which is often what stands between a patient staying on a ward and getting home. The right seating and sleeping position matters as much as the exercises we do — good posture through the twenty-four hours protects skin, supports breathing and swallowing, and keeps people comfortable enough to keep moving.

As well as visiting people in their own homes, we provide physiotherapy in care homes for self-funding residents across Cambridge and Cambridgeshire. Families often ask us to continue rehabilitation after a relative moves into a home, and managers bring us in where residents need more than the level of input the home can provide itself.
We work regularly with homes run by the larger national groups, including Hamberley, Barchester and Care UK, as well as independent homes. Sessions can be arranged for an individual resident, or as a regular visiting service for a whole home.
