FAQ - Your local questions

Yes, and it is worth ringing before he is discharged. Mulberry and Oak wards at St Cross look after older people, and the hospital has a good reputation for rehabilitation — but a ward corridor is a very different place from his own hallway. We take referrals straight from families, so nothing goes through the ward and there is no list to join. Tell us the likely date and we will book the first visit into that first week home, which is when confidence and ground go fastest.

It is worth acting on, yes. Sleeping in the chair almost always means the stairs have become a job rather than a habit, and once the upstairs is given up the walking that kept her strong quietly goes with it. It is also hard on the legs and the skin in ways that build up over weeks. Nothing needs to have gone wrong for this to be worth assessing, and stairs respond well to focused work while they are still being attempted.

Yes, and her age tells us a good deal less than what has changed recently. Strength responds at any age — the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy built a public campaign on exactly that point, and the research behind it is sound. What matters far more is the trajectory: somebody who was getting to the shops in Hillmorton in the spring and is not now has plenty to aim at. We would assess her properly and say honestly what we think is achievable, including where we think a goal has passed.

Yes — Hillmorton, Bilton, Dunchurch, Wolston, Long Lawford, Clifton upon Dunsmore and the villages round about. Rugby is our base for this corner of Warwickshire and the edges are not a hard boundary. A village address changes nothing about how long we stay or what we work on, and it is usually where the visit is worth most, because the alternative is a drive and a car park at the far end. If you are further out, ring and ask.

Extremely, and it is often the reason a family rings rather than a problem with it. Being told to do your exercises by your own daughter is a different conversation from being asked by somebody whose job it is — the first feels like being managed, the second like being treated. It also takes the friction out of the house, which matters if you are the one there every day. We would rather he worked with us and kept the peace with you than the other way round.

Because strength is built by doing, and a care visit is built to be quick. Each transfer done for her is one she has not practised, and over months that quietly removes the very thing that was keeping her upright. This is not a failing on the carers’ part — doing it for her is faster, it feels safer in the moment, and anybody would do the same. What changes it is agreeing which small parts of the visit she does for herself, and giving the care team the confidence to wait while she does them.

You will hear from us directly, without having to chase anybody. Distance is common and it is often the reason families ring in the first place — the person who worries most is frequently the one who cannot see for themselves. We report after visits, we say what has changed and what has not, and you can ring us rather than going through whoever lives nearest. If something is going backwards, you will hear that from us first rather than finding out on a visit.

Care homes in Rugby

Most of this work is arranged and paid for privately by families — a block of visits after a fall or a hospital stay, or ongoing work to keep someone moving. It sits alongside whatever the home already provides, and we work with their staff so the exercises carry on between our visits. You can read more about additional physiotherapy for residents.
