FAQ - Your local questions

All of them, and that is rather the point of a home service. Ringwood sits awkwardly between trusts — people go to the Royal Bournemouth, to Southampton General, or to Lymington New Forest Hospital for a rehabilitation bed, depending on where they live and what happened. We do not belong to any of them, so we pick up wherever somebody has been and carry on from there. Tell us which hospital it was and roughly when they are coming out, and we will plan around that.

It is one of the most useful things you could mention. A daily walk that quietly transfers to somebody else is a large amount of exercise disappearing without anyone deciding anything. Whatever the reason underneath — the legs, the uneven ground, a worry about the dog pulling — the effect is the same, and it compounds over months. Nothing needs to have gone wrong for this to be worth assessing, and getting that walk back is a far better goal than any exercise we could invent.

It is not too late to look, and looking honestly is the point. The longer somebody has not done something, the more impossible it feels — that is normal, and it is not evidence that nothing can change. What has usually been missing is time rather than potential: enough weeks to rebuild the strength and the confidence that standing needs. We would assess what is genuinely in the way and tell you plainly either way. We never promise outcomes, and we have yet to meet anybody with nothing at all to work with.

Yes — Fordingbridge, Burley, Sopley, Ellingham, Poulner and the lanes through the forest. This is a scattered part of the county with very little on the doorstep, which is exactly why home visits matter here more than most places. A remote address does not change how long we stay or what we work on. If you are beyond the places named, ring and ask rather than deciding for yourself — we would much rather say yes than have somebody rule themselves out.

Slowly, and treating the confidence as a clinical problem rather than a personality one. After a fall the fear is often doing more damage than the injury did, because moving less weakens the legs and makes the next fall likelier. Most people can do considerably more than they believe, and much of our work is proving it in steps small enough not to frighten anybody. An hour of decent company does more for confidence than it sounds, and it is part of the treatment rather than a courtesy.

Yes, and we work alongside the home rather than around it. We ask the manager first, keep the staff informed and fit around mealtimes and personal care. Families usually ring when somebody has been steadily doing less since they moved in — not because the home has let them down, but because somewhere everything is done for you is somewhere strength quietly goes. We leave written guidance so the work continues between visits, and managers in the New Forest are welcome to contact us directly.

Less, usually, and we will show you exactly what. It generally means letting him stand up without a hand under the elbow, letting him walk to the kitchen rather than carrying things through, and giving him the extra ten seconds it takes to manage something himself. The hardest part is not helping — watching somebody struggle briefly when you could step in is genuinely difficult. We are clear about which struggles are safe and useful and which are not, so you are not left judging that on your own.

Hampshire County Council adult social care — the county’s front door for a care assessment or advice.

Care homes in Ringwood

Most of this work is arranged and paid for privately by families — a block of visits after a fall or a hospital stay, or ongoing work to keep someone moving. It sits alongside whatever the home already provides, and we work with their staff so the exercises carry on between our visits. You can read more about additional physiotherapy for residents.
