Ormskirk hospital did not admit my mother — she went to Southport. Is that normal?
It is the usual pattern, and it catches families out. Ormskirk’s hospital does a great deal — maternity, children’s services, its inpatient wards, physiotherapy outpatients and the West Lancashire walk-in centre, open eight until eight, seven days a week — but an older person who becomes acutely unwell will often end up at Southport instead. Wherever she was admitted, the work of getting stronger happens afterwards, at home. That is where we come in.
Can you help her home after a hospital stay?
Yes, and it is better to ring before discharge than after. A ward gets somebody safe enough to leave: walking a few steps on a flat floor with staff at hand and rails in the right places. Her own hallway, her own stairs and her own bathroom are a different job, and the first fortnight home is when most ground is lost. We take referrals straight from families, with no GP letter and no waiting list, and we aim to be there in that first week.
Do you come out to the villages?
We come to you. Ormskirk itself, and out to Aughton, Burscough, Scarisbrick, Parbold, Halsall, Westhead, Lathom, Rufford, Tarleton and Newburgh. There is no clinic to get to and no car park to negotiate, which for a lot of our clients is the whole point.

It is the call we most wish families made sooner. Nothing dramatic has to happen for somebody to lose a great deal of strength — they stop making a journey they have made for years, and the legs follow the habit down within months. By the time there is a fall there is usually a long quiet decline behind it, and that decline is the part that responds best to work. We would aim at the actual trip into town rather than at exercises that have nothing to do with it.
She has carers coming in. Would you be duplicating them?
No, and it is worth being clear about what we do not do. We are not there for personal care, meals or medication — that is theirs, and we would not want to complicate a routine that works. Our hour is spent on movement: standing, walking, balance, stairs, and whatever specific thing she has stopped being able to manage. The overlap is deliberate in one direction only — we want what we work on to show up in their visits, so a transfer that took two people starts taking one.
Does she need a GP referral?
No. We are chartered physiotherapists and you can ring us directly. With her permission we will write to her practice if we find something that needs a doctor — pain that is not controlled, a medication affecting her balance, something we are not happy about — and we are glad to report progress if they would like it. Nothing has to be arranged through the surgery before we begin.
She had physiotherapy at the hospital outpatients. Why would she need this as well?
Because it is a different piece of work in a different place. Outpatient physiotherapy is usually a course of appointments for a specific problem, and it depends on being able to get there — which, for a lot of the people we see, is already the hard part. What we do is longer, slower and inside the house: her chair, her stairs, her back step, her routine. The two are not in competition, and if outpatients is working well we will say so.
